They included the young Nuno \u00c1lvares Pereira. In July 1383, six thousand men left Vila Vi\u00e7osa for the border at Elvas.<\/h1>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f0c9d07 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f0c9d07\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-row\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a31c2a5\" data-id=\"a31c2a5\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-951fac0 line-height-32 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"951fac0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>Following the death of King Fernando, Vila Vi\u00e7osa took the side of Castile under its governor, Vasco Porcalho, albeit against the wishes of the townspeople. Vila Vi\u00e7osa would only return to Portuguese rule after the Battle of Aljubarrota, when King Jo\u00e3o I gave it to the Warden of the Kingdom, Nuno \u00c1lvares Pereira.<\/p><p>Dom Fernando, who received the title of Count of Arraiolos from his grandfather, Nuno \u00c1lvares Pereira, and became 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0Duke of Bragan\u00e7a upon the early death of his eldest brother, Dom Afonso, the Count of Our\u00e9m, established himself at Vila Vi\u00e7osa. Teod\u00f3sio I had it laid out as an artillery castle, the only one of its kind in Portugal, based on a plan by Benedetto da Ravenna, the architect behind Mazagan Fortress in North Africa.<\/p><p>Following the Restoration of Independence and in order to withstand potential attacks, the Castle was adapted by Cosmander to provide the kind of defences required in that age, by adding a polygonal, star-shaped system and reinforcing the citadel walls. It was fortified once again by Schomberg in 1662 for its last major military conflict, which saw the Portuguese triumph over the Castilian army led by the Marquis of Caracena at the Battle of Montes Claros in June 1665.<\/p><p>Up until the late 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, the palace housed an infantry regiment.<\/p><p>The walls were restored in the 1930s and 40s at the behest of the General Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments, while the preservation of the ramparts and fortress of Vila Vi\u00e7osa Castle were funded by the Funda\u00e7\u00e3o da Casa de Bragan\u00e7a.<\/p><p>The walled enclosure contains the Igreja Matriz, the main church that holds an image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Vi\u00e7osa.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vila Vi\u00e7osa Castle On 7 July 1382, Gon\u00e7alo Vasques de Azevedo, commander of the fortress on the border between the Tagus and the Guadiana, brought captains, alcaides and commanders of other minor border fortresses together here to defend the Alentejo against a Castilian invasion.
